Discerning
COSDU's topic yesterday was particularly interesting, especially as most of us are at a cross road in our life, be it education wise or may be ev where to settle down... Fr.Koning a Jesuit priest from the Jesuit Theological College gave a good talk on this topic and I thought he covered this wide topic very well. As my readers on this blog are only COSDU peeps, I shall not talk more but just add one more quote that Fr. Koning did not mention which I discovered while researching on this topic.

Hi Ramesh,
I really benefited from the talk. Father Robin made sola scriptura sound logical. And that says a lot. However, I think that there should be an avenue for a difference of opinions and even the differences in intrepreting scripture, rather than relying entirely on what is traditionally believed.
Winnie, I think you mean Father Robin made sola scriptura sound illogical, don't you? :)
There is an avenue for differences in opinions, but insofar as ideas are further developed. Never should an interpretation contradict what has always been believed by the Church. Cos that would mean the Holy Spirit hasn't been around all the time that the Church believed that original idea and suddenly the Holy Spirit is back to enlighten whoever thought of the contradicting idea. That's not what Jesus promised when He said the gates of Hell will never prevail against the Church that HE built and that He would be with us always.
Ultimately, the issue of authority comes down to how much faith you have in Jesus' ability to maintain His Church to be whole and sound. Do you think He would allow 1 billion people (ie the Catholic Church) over 2000 years to be led astray by a particular idea, that is actually correctly taught by a minor number of splinter/schism groups? No I think the Holy Spirit is doing a pretty good job. You might say going with the majority isn't always good but this is a matter of faith in Jesus' promise to keep his flock together. Besides, if you look at the issues the Catholic Church has to deal with in society today, eg abortion, stem cell research, contraception, sanctity of marriage, I'll say we're actually in the minority.

but yes, i love that quote from Psalm 3:5-6. whenevr idont understand things or i get fed up with why things are going a certian way, that keeps me grounded to my faith in God as my shephered, provider and Father. :)
